TITLE: Carpentry Crew Member
LOCATION: Facilities Center Bldg. 201
SUPERVISOR'S TITLE: Carpentry Supervisor
HOURS: Fall/Spring: 10-20hrs. Per week
Summer: 40 hrs. Per week
STARTING SALARY: Group 3
 
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Under the supervision of a carpenter or a student Crew Leader, provides a variety of maintenance repairs to carpentry related items, mostly in interior spaces of the residence halls. Will involve working with other students, both male and female, in a team type effort or working one-on-one with a carpenter. This is a manual labor position that involves lifting and carrying heavy tools and materials, sweeping floors, emptying trash, etc., under sometimes hot and dirty conditions.
 
GENERAL DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participate in preparation activities for the opening of residence halls and apartments.
 
SPECIFIC STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Arrive at work on time and ready to work.
  • Cut out and patches drywall walls and ceilings, tiles, and grid work.
  • Repairs/replaces missing/broken ceiling tiles and grid work.
  • Manufactures and installs window screens.
  • Repairs/replaces doors and lock hardware, including applying Formica coverings to door surfaces.
  • Repair/replace closet doors.
  • Make other carpentry repairs as assigned.
  • Ensures all work sites/spaces and tools are left neat, clean and professional including sweeping floors, emptying trash, etc.
  • Assists in vehicles maintenance by assisting in washing, waxing, and inspecting State vehicles used by the carpentry crews.
  • During periods of snowfall, reports to work to assist in snow removal.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
We are looking for honest, hard working people who will be on time, don't mind getting dirty, like working for other students, and are in good physical condition. You should also meet the following criteria:
  • Registered student at UMCP (Fall/Spring).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. up a set of stairs.
  • Prior Carpentry experience preferred, but not required. We will train you.
  • Familiarity with UMCP Residence Halls preferred.
  • Familiarity with large power tools helpful.
 

Employees in this position are exposed to solvents, adhesives and cleaning products, which can cause irritation to the lungs, eyes or skin when used improperly. It is important to maintain adequate ventilation. Training in the safe use of these products will be provided. Appropriate protection, such as goggles and gloves will be provided and should be used when necessary.

You will also work with power tools and sharp cutting tools. Training on the safe use of all tools will be provided, however, caution should be observed.
